CNU Center for Community Engagement

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) grew out of the University’s commitment to scholarship, leadership and service. The CCE has grown significantly in the ensuing years, expanding its network to engage many more students, faculty, and community partners in meaningful civic work and thoughtful dialogue about pressing social issues. In 2011, the CCE was accepted as a member of the prestigious Bonner Foundation Network, and proceeded to recruit and select the first cohort of Bonner Service Scholars. The CCE’s strategic location in the DSU is home to the Bonner Office, and allows for access to several key student services departments and provides a central campus location across from the Trible Library and next to the Student Success Center.

The City

Christopher Newport University is in the vibrant city of Newport News. Newport News has a variety of activities, an eminence culture, and history. A Bonner Service Scholar, Caitlyn Snead, developed a Love Newport News initiative, that allows students to embrace the Newport News community.

The Love Newport News initiative

The Love Newport News initiative is focused on fostering strong relationships between CNU students and the Newport News community. By educating students on our diverse city, we are able to encourage positive interactions between the two communities. Educational sessions address the geography, recreational activities, historical events, and urban segregation within Newport News. There is a particular emphasis on student engagement through service and supporting small businesses throughout the community. With these efforts, we are hoping to establish a mutualistic relationship between the two communities.
