Course Description: This community-engaged learning (CEL) course will allow students to observe and apply academic knowledge about engaging with multilingual learners in the community, namely in k12 schools. By working alongside ESL teachers, students will develop knowledge and skills to address community-identified priorities while maintaining a commitment to the public good. Students in this course must work directly with teachers in Newport News Public Schools classrooms in a mutually beneficial partnership where students learn from community experts and develop a strong commitment to ethics, professionalism, and respect. They regularly reflect upon their experiences to gain insight into the lives of multilingual learners in the Hampton Roads area.
