Classroom Connections Program
The Classroom Connections Program is a partnership between Christopher Newport University (CNU) and the York County School Division (YCSD). This initiative provides CNU students with meaningful volunteer opportunities in local schools while offering structured support and mentorship along the way.
What is Classroom Connections?
Classroom Connections gives CNU students the chance to work directly with educators to make a positive impact on the lives of local K–12 students. The program is intentionally designed to welcome participants at all experience levels. Volunteers begin in a scaffolded environment, typically mentoring students one-on-one using premade activities, and can gradually take on more involved roles such as assisting teachers in the classroom. For those interested, there may also be opportunities to explore roles outside of traditional teaching.
Who Can Participate?
The program is open to all CNU students who are passionate about their development and eager to contribute to the success of local students. No prior teaching experience is required—just a willingness to learn, serve, and grow.
Why Participate?
Volunteers in Classroom Connections gain valuable experience while making a meaningful difference. Benefits include:
-
Professional support network: Connect with educators and professionals across fields such as education, business, law, information technology, psychology, social work, and more.
-
Service hours: Earn volunteer/service hours that count toward programs such as Honors and PLP.
-
MAT program requirements: For students interested in CNU’s five-year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, volunteer hours can be applied toward program requirements.
-
Personal and professional growth: Develop confidence, leadership, and communication skills in a real-world setting.
-
Strong Peer community: A large number of volunteers each semester creates a strong support network for new volunteers.
-
Transportation support: Assistance is often available for students without their own transportation.
Time Commitment and Support
Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one two-hour block per week (including travel time). Regular participation is required, as it helps build strong relationships with students and teachers. Volunteers may choose to contribute more time if their schedules allow.
Throughout the experience, participants receive ongoing mentorship and guidance from both CNU and YCSD educators. The program is scaffolded to ensure that volunteers feel confident and supported as they grow into their roles.
